Venus in Repose
1.5’ height, 3’ width / acrylic wool blend
$500
A portrait of the artist, inspiration drawn from works of Rubens and his peers in the field of “art modern women are compared to if they aren’t skinny.” A view that is openly voyeuristic without featuring either the face of its inspiration nor its maker, lacking even the hands that made this piece, Venus in Repose is a conversation with the artist on the intersections of what it means to be a woman in the modern world. This is a conflict between being ogled by the viewer lovingly made in “women’s work,” specifically filet crochet, a style of lace making, that is often undervalued, underappreciated, and slowly going extinct, but most importantly, impossible to be recreated with machine.
